The Lurker at the Threshold, the Key and the Gate, All-in-One, everywhere and nowhere, coterminous with all of time and space, he is Yog-Sothoth, born of the Nameless Mists and keeper of immense and terrible secrets. Apparently seated near his grandfather, Azathoth (the "blind idiot god" and "source of all", apparently a continuous nuclear reaction at the center of all creation, or possibly a quasi-sentient black hole - humans don't know for certain, as achieving proximity to the thing does not allow for survival long enough for report), possibly imprisoned there, his reach and influence are notably immense. Yog-Sothoth fathered at least two children on at least one human woman and apparently others on various extra-terrestrial entities. All of his spawn, even if immediately human in appearance, are monstrous and usually insane. While he seems to share some characteristics with Nyarlathotep such as multiple known avatars and the ability to communicate directly with mortals, Yog-Sothoth has human worshipers, usually magicians, although his strongest cult is among a crustacean/fungoid fusion life form who regularly experiment on and exploit humans. He has however had non-hostile interactions with humanity; as Umr at-Tawil, the veiled priest (or "the Priest Not to Be Described"), Yog-Sothoth imparts knowledge to brave seekers and lets them go. It is suspected that he only does this when it furthers his probably malign aims. Some writers claim he is at war with Nyarlathotep, others that Nyarlathotep's aspects are merely a part of his machinations.
